Moong Dal Sambar (Pappu Pulusu)

Rich in protein and carbohydrates Mung bean or Moong dal as its popularly called in the Indian subcontinent, is used in a lots of regional cuisines of India and also used in a lot of packed food items.

This sambar made with Moong dal is so light on the stomach and very easy to digest. As its so good and so easy to digest, you will find a version of this sambar in almost all the Indian kitchens most of the time. Especially Moong Dal sambar is what you will be made to eat when you are pregnant, nursing, or when you have aged people at home who want to eat light food. If you are down with flu or tired from work, then this sambar is what you should be making as its very light and very healthy.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup Moong Dal
  • 5 Green Chillies
  • 3/4 tsp Salt
  • 2 Lemons
  • 1 Onion
  • 2 Tomatoes
  • Little Ginger Garlic Paste (Optional)
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric
  • 1/4 tsp Mustard
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin
  • 1 tsp Channa Dal
  • 1 tsp Urad Dal
  • 6 Curry Leaves
  • 6 Coriander Leaves
  • Cooking Oil
  • 1 tsp Coriander Powder
  • 1 cap Lemon Juice (Optional)

Instructions

  1. Take some Moong dal in a pressure cooker and fry with some oil.

  2. Add to the cooker:

    Chillies

    Turmeric

    Salt

  3. Pour water and pressure cook it for 4 minutes.

  4. Then mash the dal in the cooker with ladle.

  5. Take a pan to create the seasoning and add the following:

    Little Oil

    Mustard

    Cumin

    Urad Dal

    Channa Dal

    Curry Leaves

    Coriander Leaves

    Onions

  6. Fry the seasoning till the Onions are translucent.

  7. Add Coriander powder and Tomato pieces.

  8. Fry some time and pour water till Sambar consistency is reached.

  9. Cook for some time on slow heat.

  10. Switch off the burner.

  11. (Optional)Add lemon juice if required

  12. Ready to serve and tastes better when hot.
