Sridevi Ulavacharu

Usually People are scared to make this curry they rather buy it from shops like abiruchi, Velanki etc. These shops specialize in making these curries. But it is more satisfying to make them at least once in a while. This curry is quite heating to the body and helps to reduce fat.  Rich in iron, protein and minerals. People who want to loose fat can try this recipe. Highest calcium content among pulses. You should always take some cooling food like butter milk after this. It is also good for menstrual irregularities.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Horse Gram (Vulavalu)
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 11/2 tsp Pepper Seeds
  • 21/2 tsp Coriander seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Fenugreek Seeds
  • 1 tsp Chili Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 1 egg sized Tamarind small
  • 4 tbsp Oil

Instructions

  1. First wash and soak the horse gram overnight in water.  Next morning boil them for 20 minutes in the cooker (after the whistle). Then blend the horse gram into a smooth paste. Soak the tamarind in water for 1/2 hour and extract the juice and keep aside.

  2. Take a pan add oil and temper with 2 cloves, 4 Cinnamon pieces, mustard and channa dal and when they splutter add curry leaves and pour the tamarind juice, add salt turmeric and chili powder and cook for 10 minutes.

  3. Mean while take a pan and fry cumin, fenugreek, coriander, pepper seeds and when they cool powder them. Now add this powder to tamarind juice and cook for 2 minutes then add the horse gram paste and cook. 

  4. You can add water according to the consistency you want. Add salt and chili powder to your liking.
