Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup Tur Dal
  • 4 to 5 Green Chillies
  • 1 Big Onion (finely Chopped)
  • 4 Tomato (medium)
  • 1 bunch Corriander Leave (finely chopped)
  • 11/2 tsp Salt
  • 21/2 tbsp Sambar Powder (home made or MTR or any other brand)
  • 1 ball Tamarind (lemon sized)
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard
  • 1/2 tsp Cummin Seeds
  • 1 tsp Urad Dal
  • 1 tsp Channa Dal
  • 6 Curry Leaves
  • 4 tbsp Oil
  • 3/4 tsp Fenugreek Seeds

Instructions

  1. Take tur dal wash it and soak it in water for 1/2 hour. 

  2. Slit the green chilies into halves. cut the tomatoes into small pieces.

  3. Take the coriander leaves and the fine stalks (throw away the thick stalks) wash them thoroughly and chop them. 
  4. Now put the tur dal into the cooker add tamarind ball after washing it, add turmeric salt. pour a glass of water close the lid and put the weight.
  5. After the whistle comes set the flame to low and cook for seven to ten minutes.

  6. Then take a pan add oil add the tempering(mustard, Fenugreek, urad, channa and cumin seeds) after it crackles add curry leaves onion finely chopped and fry till translucent add the chilies and tomato pieces, Sambar powder and fry for 5 minutes then switch off. 

  7. Now open the cooker lid after the pressure has escaped and grind the dal to a smooth paste with a dal ladle or mixie.  

  8. Add the fried ingredients from the pan to the dal in the cooker. Add a glass of water to the consistency you want.
  9. Add the copped coriander. taste if you want you can add some more salt. Now close the lid and cook for one whistle. 

  10. This is the basic sambar to this you can add any vegetable you want like carrots, beetroot, radish drumsticks.
