Pulihora (Tamarind Rice)

This rice is mostly given as prasadam in temples.  Very tasty and is the main dish of all festivals. Easy to make, might be not not as easy as lemon rice but many like this better. Try it your children will love it.

Ingredients

  • 1 Glass Rice
  • 1 lemon sized Tamarind Ball big
  • 2 tsp Coriander Seeds
  • 1/4 tsp Fenugreek Seeds
  • 4 tsp Sesame Seeds
  • 5 Green Chilies
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric
  • 4 tbsp Peanuts optional
  • 10 Curry Leaves

Instructions

  1. Soak the tamarind in water for 1/2 hour and smash it with your hands and filter the water and throw away the pulp( Squeeze the pulp of all the juice before throwing away).

  2. Cook the rice and keep aside (pour two glasses water for one glass of rice, soak for 1 hour before cooking)  When the water starts to boil put in low flame and cook.

  3. Fry the coriander, fenugreek and sesame seeds and make them into powder in the blender and keep aside. Grind the green chilies and keep aside.

  4. Take a pan add 2 tbsp oil, temper with 1/2 tsp of cumin and mustard seeds, 1 tsp of urad and channa dal, 2 dry red chilies and curry leaves. when they start spluttering add the green chili paste, turmeric and, salt and fry till the raw smell of the chilies is gone. 

  5. Now add the blended powder and two pinches of asafoetida (hing) and fry for 2 minutes then add the tamarind juice and let cook till the curry thickens and the oil starts to surface.(or you can boil the tamarind juice till it thickens and then add it to the pan.

  6. Then put the rice in a big plate and let cool and add the curry from the pan to the rice and mix it thoroughly. If salt is less you can add some more. Serve hot with papad.
