Menthi Pulusu

A unique dish not known by many but once you get the taste of it you cannot but like it, Speciality of the Nellore region. A dish cooked with tamarind juice. They eat it as a main dish. Finger licking.

Ingredients

  • 11/2 tbsp Sesame seeds
  • 2 Oinions big
  • 11/2 tsp Coriander Seeds
  • 2 tsp Desiccated Coconut
  • 1 ball Tamarind Orange sized
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • 11/2 tsp Salt
  • 2 tsp Chili powder
  • 4 tbsp Oil

Instructions

  1. Grind sesame seeds, 1 onion, coriander seeds and coconut and keep aside.

  2. Cut the other onion into small pieces.  Soak the tamarind ball in water for half an hour.

  3. Make tamarind juice from soaked tamarind(pulp the tamarind with your hand and then seperate the water from the pulp, the pulp is discarded.

  4. Take a pan put oil put tampering add onion pieces fry till light brown add the masala, turmeric, chili powder and salt and fry for some time when the nice smell starts to emit pour the tamarind water.

  5. If needed pour plain water to get watery consistency and cook till the curry thickens and oil starts to seperate. You start getting an good smel, then switch off and serve with rice.

  6. This dish can be stored for a week like chutneys. Its good with doshas also. This dish tastes good when you are sick and dont feel like eating anything. Tamarind is good for reviving your taste buds.
