Berakaya Kutu (Ridge Gourd curry with Channa Dal)

Tasty dish goes well with rice and rotis. High in proteins as channa dal is there. Nice dish to cook when you are lazy. It can be served singly as it has both vegetable and dal in it and it has a semi solid consistency like a dal. You can also reap all the benefits of the vegetable too. High in fiber.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Channa Dal
  • 2 cups Ridge Gourd Pieces
  • 2 Tomatoes Big
  • 2 Green Chilies
  • 1/2 tsp Chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 6 Garlic Cloves
  • 2 tsp Coriander Powder
  • 4 tbsp Oil

Instructions

  1. Soak the channa dal in water for 2 hours. Then boil it in the cooker for 3 minutes and keep aside also boil the gourd pieces along with channa dal.

  2. Now wash and peel the ridge gourd and cut into medium pieces. Also cut onion, tomato and chilies into small pieces.

  3. Take a pan add oil and temper it (1/2 tsp each of cumin and mustard seeds, 1 tsp each of urad and channa dal and 6 curry leaves) when they start to splutter add onions and tomatoes and green chillies fry for 2 minutes add salt, turmeric and gourd pieces and fry for 5 minutes then add channa dal(don't smash the dal) and fry for another 4 minutes.

  4. Then add the garlic coriander powder and mix well and fry for two minutes keep stirring. then switch off and garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or chapatis. This dish was my father's favourite dish.
